Abstract

Pathologies of the anterior segment of the eye constitute a significant proportion of ophthalmic diseases and include lesions of the cornea, anterior chamber, iris, ciliary body, crystalline lens, zonular apparatus, and anterior chamber angle. In some clinical situations, conventional biomicroscopy and gonioscopy are insufficient to provide a complete assessment of deeply located and retroiridal structures, particularly when the optical media of the eye are opaque.

Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) is a high-resolution imaging technique that enables detailed assessment of the anatomical relationships between the cornea, anterior chamber angle, iris, ciliary body, crystalline lens, and zonular apparatus. This method has high diagnostic value in angle-closure glaucoma, plateau iris syndrome, lens subluxation, post-traumatic changes, iris and ciliary body neoplasms, as well as in ocular hypotony and postoperative complications.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the diagnostic potential of ultrasound biomicroscopy in various pathologies of the anterior segment of the eye and to evaluate its clinical significance as part of a comprehensive ophthalmological examination.
