INCRETIN DYSFUNCTION AND THE ROLE OF GLP-1 IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF PANCREATOGENIC DIABETES MELLITUS

Abstract

The study was conducted on 120 male albino rats with chronic pancreatitis induced by two intraperitoneal injections of L-arginine. Serum GLP-1, GIP, and insulin concentrations were determined by enzyme-linked immuno­sorbent assay (ELISA) on days 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 of the experiment. A progressive decrease in all studied hormones was observed, reaching maximal severity during the late stages of disease progression. These findings indicate impairment of the enteroinsular axis and attenuation of the incretin effect, suggesting that incretin dysfunc­tion represents an important mechanism underlying endocrine insufficiency and the development of pancreatogenic diabetes mellitus in chronic pancreatitis.
