COMPARATIVE MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF HYPOXIC INJURY IN THE KIDNEY AND PROSTATE DURING CHRONIC CARBON MONOXIDE EXPOSURE

Abstract

Chronic carbon monoxide exposure induces persistent tissue hypoxia, resulting in structural remodeling of the kidney. The severity of renal injury largely depends on age-related adaptive capacity of the nephron. The present study aimed to evaluate age-related morphological alterations of renal tissue following chronic carbon monoxide exposure.

The study was carried out on 3- and 9-month-old male albino rats. Histological and morphometric analyses were performed to assess glomerular architecture, Bowman's capsule space, tubular morphology, and interstitial tissue.

The results demonstrated that renal alterations in 3-month-old animals were predominantly adaptive, whereas 9-month-old rats exhibited more pronounced glomerular remodeling, widening of Bowman's capsule space, tubular epithelial degeneration, and interstitial expansion. Morphometric analysis confirmed that the severity of hy­poxia-induced structural remodeling increased with age.
